Agentic commerce on Shopify, in plain terms
Updated 2 August 2026
Agentic commerce means an assistant does the browsing, comparing and sometimes the buying on a shopper's behalf. For a merchant the practical consequence is simple: the thing being evaluated is your product data, and the evaluator never sees your site.
It is already live
Shopify reports that AI-driven traffic to its stores grew eightfold year over year in the first quarter of 2026, and orders from AI-powered searches grew close to thirteenfold. Whatever you think of the trend, it is no longer hypothetical.
What an agent needs from you
Structured, complete, accurate product data, and policies it can quote. That is close to the whole list. It does not need your brand story or your homepage.
The uncomfortable part
Presentation stops being a differentiator in this channel. A store with beautiful photography and thin product data will lose to a plain one with complete records, which inverts where most merchants have been investing.
