Selling on ChatGPT from Shopify: the actual eligibility rules
There is no application to submit and no fee to pay. Shopify's ChatGPT channel is active by default for stores that qualify, which means the only question that matters is whether you qualify. Most merchants assume they do, and a surprising number fail on a policy page rather than on a product.
In short
- The ChatGPT channel is active by default for eligible stores; there is nothing to apply for.
- Eligibility requires US customers, Shopify Catalog eligible products, accepting the Agentic Storefronts terms, and three completed store policies.
- Shoppers check out in your own store, and Shopify charges no extra fee for the channel.
What Shopify requires
Shopify publishes the eligibility list, and it is short enough to check in a few minutes.
- Your store must sell to customers in the United States, though the store itself can be based anywhere
- Your products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog
- You must accept the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service
- Your terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy must all be completed under Settings, Policies
The policy requirement is the one that catches people
Three published policies are not a nice-to-have here, they are a gate. A store with a drafted refund policy is not eligible to sell on ChatGPT at all, regardless of how complete the catalog is. This is the clearest example of a store-level setting deciding a product-level outcome.
It is also the cheapest problem on this list to fix, which is why it is worth checking first.
Things that quietly disqualify products
Beyond the store-level gate, Shopify names several product-level exclusions that do not produce any warning in the admin.
- B2B-only products are not supported on agentic storefronts
- Products falling under OpenAI's prohibited categories will not appear in discovery results
- Legal disclosures need to sit within the first 6,000 characters of the description
Where the purchase actually happens
ChatGPT is a discovery channel. Shoppers are sent to your own checkout, in an in-app browser or a new tab, so your branding, payment methods and selling strategies all still apply. Shopify charges no additional fee for the channel; you pay your usual processing fees.
That matters for how you read the numbers. Traffic arriving this way lands in your normal analytics as a referral, not as a separate marketplace.
Opting out, if you need to
Sales channels, then Agentic, in your Shopify admin. Removing ChatGPT's access filters your product data out of what Shopify Catalog provides to it. Worth knowing exists, rarely worth using.
How Endcap handles this
The eligibility list above splits cleanly into things a tool can verify and things it cannot. Endcap checks the ones it can: whether your refund, privacy and terms policies are published rather than drafted, and whether each product meets the Shopify Catalog requirements that eligibility depends on. Those run on every scan and each finding links to the Shopify page behind it.
It does not accept the Agentic Storefronts terms for you, and it cannot tell you whether you sell into the United States. Those are decisions rather than checks. The value is in not discovering, three weeks later, that a drafted policy was the only thing standing between your catalog and the channel.
Common questions
Do I need to be based in the United States?
No. Shopify's requirement is that your store sells to customers in the United States; the store itself can be based anywhere.
Are there fees for selling through ChatGPT?
Shopify states there are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT beyond your standard payment processing fees.
Why would my products not appear?
Common causes are a policy still in draft, products that fail Shopify Catalog requirements, B2B-only products which are not supported, and products falling under OpenAI's prohibited categories.
Can I opt out?
Yes, under Sales channels then Agentic in your Shopify admin. Removing access filters your product data out of what Shopify Catalog provides to ChatGPT.
