What Shopify Catalog is, and why it decides your AI visibility

Shopify Catalog is the structured product feed that Shopify syndicates to AI channels, including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and AI Mode in Google Search. It is not a ranking system in the way search results are. It is an inclusion system, and that difference is what catches merchants out.

In short

  • Shopify Catalog is an inclusion system, not a ranking one: a product that fails a requirement is absent, not demoted.
  • The requirements are published and short: title, image, price above zero, publication to a storefront channel, a URL, not Unlisted, not hidden from search engines.
  • Once included, a separate set of fields decides whether you are chosen.

Inclusion is binary

Search engines rank. If your page is weak it appears lower. Shopify Catalog does not work that way: a product that fails a requirement is not in the feed at all, so no assistant can recommend it regardless of how good the product, the photography or the reviews are.

That is why an audit is worth running before any optimisation work. Improving a description on a product that is excluded changes nothing.

The requirements

Shopify publishes them. A product needs a title, at least one image, a price above zero, publication to a storefront channel and an identifiable URL. It must not be Unlisted or hidden from search engines. The store itself must be on a paid plan and must not be password protected.

What we found when we measured it

Across the Shopify catalogs we scanned, nearly half had at least one product excluded outright. The median readiness score was 85 out of 100. These are brands with staff, agencies and budget.

Ranking still matters, after inclusion

Once a product is in the feed, Shopify names the fields AI platforms consider when matching it to a shopper: title, description, images, type, vendor, collections, tags, barcode and variant option names. Those decide whether you are chosen, not whether you are seen.

Where a tool earns its place

You can audit this by hand and for a small catalog you probably should, because doing it once teaches you which of these requirements your own processes tend to break. The checklist further down this cluster is deliberately written so that it works without installing anything.

The argument for automating it is scale and drift rather than difficulty. None of these checks is hard; there are simply a lot of them, multiplied by every product, re-run after every bulk import. Endcap runs the 22 product checks and 5 store checks deterministically and links each finding to the Shopify page it came from, which means you can disagree with a result and go and verify it. That is the part worth insisting on from any tool here, including ours.

Common questions

Do I have to sign up for Shopify Catalog?

No. Eligible products are included automatically. There is no form, no fee and no submission step, which is why the work is entirely about eligibility rather than enrolment.

How do I know if a specific product is included?

Shopify does not surface a per-product inclusion flag in the admin, which is the awkward part. You verify it by checking the published requirements against the product yourself, or by running an audit that does the same thing at scale.

How long after fixing something does it appear?

Shopify syndicates on its own schedule and each assistant refreshes independently. Think in days rather than minutes, and treat a fix as removing a blocker rather than as publishing.
