Answer engine optimisation for Shopify, without the acronym soup
Updated 2 August 2026
AEO, GEO, LLM SEO and llms.txt arrived at once and mostly describe the same ambition with different letters. Here is what each one means and, more usefully, which of them changes anything for a Shopify merchant.
The terms
Answer engine optimisation is making content usable by systems that answer rather than list. Generative engine optimisation is the same idea aimed at generated answers. LLM SEO is the same again. The distinctions are mostly marketing.
Where llms.txt fits
llms.txt is a proposed file describing your site for language models. It is worth having and it is not the mechanism by which Shopify products reach assistants. That mechanism is Shopify Catalog, which is populated from your product records regardless of any file you publish.
What actually moves the needle
For a Shopify store, in order: being included in the feed, having complete product data, having accurate availability, and having published policies. Everything else is downstream of those.
Check your own catalog
Endcap runs every check in this guide and shows you which products fail, and why.
