Thin product descriptions and why assistants skip them
Updated 2 August 2026
A one-line description passes every requirement and still loses. Shoppers ask assistants for specifics such as waterproof, machine washable or fits a carry-on, and a description that never mentions those cannot be matched to them.
Why this weakens matching
A short description gives an agent too few details to match against specific shopper questions like 'waterproof' or 'machine washable'.
Shopify asks for clear, accurate and detailed descriptions so agents can match products to searches.
How common it is
We scanned 19 established Shopify catalogs covering 3,562 products. This appeared in 79% of those stores, affecting 20.5% of all products scanned. These are brands with staff and agencies, so it is not a small-merchant problem.
How to check it yourself
- Look for descriptions under roughly 200 characters of actual text.
- Add materials, dimensions, care instructions and the situations the product is for.
The fix
Expand the description with materials, dimensions, care instructions and use cases.
