Barcodes are how assistants recognise your product elsewhere

A GTIN, UPC, EAN or ISBN lets an assistant match your listing to the same item seen elsewhere, which is what makes comparison and trust possible. Without one you are harder to place and harder to believe.

In short

  • The product stays in Shopify Catalog, but assistants have less to match against when a shopper describes what they want.
  • We did not see this among the catalogs we scanned, which makes it rare rather than unimportant.
  • This one needs a human decision, so Endcap finds and groups it but does not write it for you.

Why this weakens matching

Barcodes are how an agent recognises your product as the same item it has seen elsewhere. Without one you are harder to compare, and harder to trust.

Shopify names Barcode as a field AI platforms consider. It is how an agent matches your product to the same product elsewhere.

The one field where guessing is worse than leaving it blank

A GTIN, UPC or EAN is what lets a system recognise that your listing and a listing somewhere else are the same physical object. That is what makes comparison possible, and comparison is how an assistant decides that recommending you is safe.

It is also the field where the temptation to auto-fill needs resisting absolutely. A wrong barcode is not a smaller version of a missing barcode, it is a different and worse failure: you have asserted that your product is a specific other product, and every system that trusts identifiers will now act on that. This is why we will not generate them, and why any tool offering to populate this field for you should be treated with suspicion. If you do not have the manufacturer's code, the correct value is empty.

How to check it yourself

  • Export your variants and look at the barcode column.
  • Fill in the manufacturer's code. Never invent one: a wrong barcode is worse than a missing one.

The fix

Add the GTIN, UPC, EAN or ISBN to each variant.

How Endcap handles this

Endcap finds and groups every product with this problem and links each finding to the Shopify document behind it, but it does not write this one for you. Finding every instance by hand means paging through the admin; the scan lists them together.

The fix touches a field we deliberately do not automate. Endcap only ever writes vendor, product type and description, because those are the three where a wrong value is visible and reversible. Prices, identifiers, publication state and status are decisions with consequences a tool should not be making on your behalf.

Common questions

Can Endcap fill in barcodes for me?

No, and it never will. A wrong GTIN is not a smaller version of a missing one: it asserts that your product is a specific other product, and every system that trusts identifiers then acts on that. If you do not have the manufacturer's code, the correct value is empty.

What if my products genuinely have no barcode?

Handmade and own-brand goods often do not, and that is fine. This is a matching finding rather than an exclusion, so the product remains in the catalog. You can buy GTINs from GS1 if comparison matters commercially to you.

Which field is this exactly?

The barcode field on each variant, which holds the GTIN, UPC, EAN or ISBN. It is per variant rather than per product, so a product with ten variants needs ten of them.
