Category attributes: the fields AI shopping agents filter on

Once a product has a standard category, Shopify offers attributes for it: color, material, size, pattern and so on. These are the structured fields an agent matches when a shopper describes what they want. A product with none set can only be matched on its title.

In short

  • The product stays in Shopify Catalog, but assistants have less to match against when a shopper describes what they want.
  • We did not see this among the catalogs we scanned, which makes it rare rather than unimportant.
  • This one needs a human decision, so Endcap finds and groups it but does not write it for you.

Why this weakens matching

When a shopper asks for "a black waterproof jacket", agents match on category attributes like color and material. A product with none set only matches on its title.

Category attributes (color, material, size and so on) are the structured fields AI shopping agents filter on when a shopper describes what they want.

Shoppers describe attributes, not titles

People ask assistants things like "a black waterproof jacket under $200" or "unscented candles in glass jars". Those requests are lists of attributes. If the product's attributes are filled, the match is direct. If they're empty, the agent has to infer them from prose, and a competitor whose fields are filled is the easier answer.

You don't need every attribute on every product. Fill the two or three that shoppers in your category actually use to choose: material and size for apparel, scent and size for candles, roast and origin for coffee. Do your best sellers first, then the rest in batches.

How to check it yourself

  • Open a product that has a category; the category attributes appear right under it in admin.
  • Check whether color, material, size and the other suggested attributes have values.
  • Fill the ones that are true for the product. Leave out what you don't know rather than guessing.

The fix

In Shopify admin, open the product and fill the category metafields (color, material, size…) under the category.

How Endcap handles this

Endcap finds and groups every product with this problem and links each finding to the Shopify document behind it, but it does not write this one for you. Finding every instance by hand means paging through the admin; the scan lists them together.

The fix touches a field we deliberately do not automate. Endcap only writes vendor, product type, description and the Shopify category, because those are the fields where a wrong value is visible and reversible. Prices, identifiers, publication state and status are decisions with consequences a tool should not be making on your behalf.

Common questions

Where do category attributes come from?

From Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy: each category defines its attributes. They are stored as category metafields on the product.

Do attributes replace a good description?

No. Attributes are for matching and filtering; the description explains the product. Agents use both.
