When the product description just repeats the title
A description that only restates the product name gives an agent nothing extra to match against how a shopper phrases a request. Detail is what makes a product findable: materials, dimensions, care, who it's for and when to use it.
In short
- The product stays in Shopify Catalog, but assistants have less to match against when a shopper describes what they want.
- We did not see this among the catalogs we scanned, which makes it rare rather than unimportant.
- Endcap can correct this across the catalog in one reviewed, reversible action.
Why this weakens matching

Write the answers to the questions shoppers ask
Shoppers ask assistants detailed questions: "socks that don't itch", "a wallet that fits 10 cards". An agent can only recommend your product for that request if the description says it. A repeated title answers none of them.
You don't need long copy. Three to five concrete sentences beat a paragraph of adjectives. Start with the facts you already know from your supplier or your packaging, then add the use case.
How to check it yourself
- Our scan flags products whose description is the title, or almost only the title.
- Open one and ask: does the description answer a question the title doesn't?
- Add the specifics a buyer asks before purchasing: what it's made of, sizes, how it fits, how to care for it.
The fix
Expand the description with specifics the title does not capture: materials, dimensions, care, use cases.
How Endcap handles this
Endcap flags this check on every product and can apply the correction across the catalog in one action, showing you the current value beside the proposed one first. Nothing is written until you select it, and every applied change stores its previous value so the batch reverts in one click. Finding every instance by hand means paging through the admin; the scan lists them together.
The rule itself is deterministic, so the same catalog produces the same finding every time, and the result links back to the Shopify page this requirement comes from.
Common questions
How long should a product description be?
Long enough to answer the buying questions: material, size or dimensions, fit or use, care. For most products that's 60 to 200 words.
Can AI write them?
It can draft them from your product data, but check every fact. An invented material or size is worse than a short honest description.
