Variant options called Title tell assistants nothing
Updated 2 August 2026
When a product has several variants under an option literally named Title, an assistant cannot answer do you have it in blue. The values may be colours, but nothing says so.
Why this weakens matching
An option called Title tells an agent nothing. It cannot answer 'do you have it in blue' if the choice has no name.
Shopify names Option name as a field AI channels read. A generic label tells an agent nothing about the choice.
How common it is
We scanned 19 established Shopify catalogs covering 3,562 products. This appeared in 11% of those stores, affecting 0.3% of all products scanned. These are brands with staff and agencies, so it is not a small-merchant problem.
How to check it yourself
- Open any multi-variant product and check the option name.
- Rename it to what it represents: Colour, Size, Material, Scent.
The fix
Rename variant options to what they represent, such as Colour, Size or Material.
