Variants without SKUs: why identical products get confused
A SKU is the identifier that keeps each size and color distinct. Shopify lists it as product organization data, and missing SKUs make look-alike products and variants harder to tell apart for inventory systems and for agents comparing options.
In short
- The product stays in Shopify Catalog, but assistants have less to match against when a shopper describes what they want.
- We did not see this among the catalogs we scanned, which makes it rare rather than unimportant.
- This one needs a human decision, so Endcap finds and groups it but does not write it for you.
Why this weakens matching
SKU keeps variants distinct for inventory and for agents comparing identical-looking products. Missing SKUs make it harder to disambiguate.

A small field that prevents mix-ups
SKUs matter most when products look alike: the same sock in five colors, the same shirt in three fits. Without them, every system that compares or syncs your catalog has to rely on titles and option names, which are rarely unique enough.
This is a low-effort, low-drama fix. Pick a short pattern that encodes product, color and size, apply it to everything, and keep it the same from then on.
How to check it yourself
- In admin, open a product's variants and check the SKU column, or export products and filter empty Variant SKU.
- Give every variant a unique, consistent SKU (for example SOCK-MER-BLK-M).
- Keep the scheme stable: changing SKUs later breaks reports and integrations.
The fix
Enter a SKU for each variant so every size or colour is individually addressable.
How Endcap handles this
Endcap finds and groups every product with this problem and links each finding to the Shopify document behind it, but it does not write this one for you. Finding every instance by hand means paging through the admin; the scan lists them together.
The fix touches a field we deliberately do not automate. Endcap only writes vendor, product type, description and the Shopify category, because those are the fields where a wrong value is visible and reversible. Prices, identifiers, publication state and status are decisions with consequences a tool should not be making on your behalf.
Common questions
Is a SKU the same as a barcode (GTIN)?
No. A SKU is your internal code; a barcode is a global identifier from GS1 or the manufacturer. Fill both when you have them.
Do SKUs need to be unique?
Yes. Duplicate SKUs cause their own errors in Shopify and in feeds.
