Why zero-priced Shopify products never reach ChatGPT
Causes exclusion from Shopify Catalog
A product priced at zero is not treated as cheap. Shopify Catalog excludes it outright, which means no AI assistant can surface it no matter how good the listing is. It is the most common accidental blocker we find, and it is almost never deliberate.
In short
- This excludes the product from Shopify Catalog entirely, so no assistant can recommend it.
- Found in 37% of the catalogs we scanned.
- This one needs a human decision, so Endcap finds and groups it but does not write it for you.
Why this excludes the product
Free products are excluded from Shopify Catalog. This is the most common accidental blocker, usually caused by placeholder or sample items left active.
Shopify Catalog requires a price greater than zero. Free products are not included.
How common it is
This appeared in 37% of the stores we scanned, affecting 2.0% of all products scanned. These are brands with staff and agencies, so it is not a small-merchant problem.
The fix that makes it worse
The obvious repair is to give the product a price. On a genuine placeholder that is correct. On a free gift, a sample, or a component that only exists to be bundled, it is a mistake, because you have just made something purchasable that was never meant to be bought on its own, and the first order for a $0.01 gift will teach you that the hard way.
Zero is frequently a deliberate choice, and the correct action for a deliberate zero is to archive the product rather than price it. Archiving removes it from the catalog and from the audit without putting a broken item on sale. This is why we classify free gifts and samples as intentional instead of flagging them: a tool that cannot tell the difference between a mistake and a decision will push you into the second kind of error while congratulating you for fixing the first.
How to check it yourself
- In your Shopify admin, open Products and sort by price ascending.
- Anything showing $0.00 is excluded from Shopify Catalog today.
- Decide per product: set a real price, or archive it if it is a placeholder, sample or add-on that should never sell on its own.
The fix
Set a real price, or archive the product if it is a placeholder, sample or add-on that should not be sold on its own.
How Endcap handles this
Endcap finds and groups every product with this problem and links each finding to the Shopify document behind it, but it does not write this one for you. Across the catalogs we scanned this affected 2.0% of products, which is the kind of number that is tedious by hand and quick in bulk.
The fix touches a field we deliberately do not automate. Endcap only ever writes vendor, product type and description, because those are the three where a wrong value is visible and reversible. Prices, identifiers, publication state and status are decisions with consequences a tool should not be making on your behalf.
Common questions
Can I just set the price to $0.01 instead?
You can, and you should not. A one cent price makes the product genuinely purchasable, so the first shopper who finds your free gift can buy it for a penny and you now owe them fulfilment. If the zero was deliberate, archive the product instead; archiving removes it from the catalog without putting a broken item on sale.
Does this apply to products that are free on purpose?
Yes, in the sense that Shopify Catalog still excludes them. Whether that is a problem depends on whether you wanted them recommended. A sample or a gift with purchase is not meant to be discovered on its own, so its exclusion is correct and no action is needed beyond archiving it if it is also cluttering your admin.
Will fixing the price make the product appear immediately?
Not instantly. Shopify syndicates Catalog on its own schedule, and the assistants that read it refresh independently of that. Treat the fix as removing a blocker rather than as publishing, and expect the change to show up over days rather than minutes.
