Duplicate product titles: two products, one name
When two products share the same title, an agent can't tell which one to recommend, and both get weaker. Each product needs a distinct, specific title that names the item and the feature that sets it apart.
In short
- The product stays in Shopify Catalog, but assistants have less to match against when a shopper describes what they want.
- We did not see this among the catalogs we scanned, which makes it rare rather than unimportant.
- This one needs a human decision, so Endcap finds and groups it but does not write it for you.
Why this weakens matching
Two products that read identically make it impossible for an agent to pick one over the other, weakening both in recommendations.
Two products that read identically make it impossible for an agent to pick one over the other, degrading both.
Merge or differentiate
Duplicate titles usually come from one of two habits: listing each color as a separate product with the same name, or importing from a supplier that reuses names. In the first case, variants of one product are often the cleaner model. In the second, the titles need the detail the supplier left out.
Either way, the test is simple: if a shopper read only the titles, could they tell the products apart? If not, neither can an assistant.
How to check it yourself
- Export your products and sort by title to spot exact duplicates, or use our scan's list.
- Decide whether they're really different products or should be variants of one product.
- If they're different, add the defining feature to each title: material, size range, edition, color family.
The fix
Give each product a distinct, specific title that names the item and its variant-defining feature.
How Endcap handles this
Endcap finds and groups every product with this problem and links each finding to the Shopify document behind it, but it does not write this one for you. Finding every instance by hand means paging through the admin; the scan lists them together.
The fix touches a field we deliberately do not automate. Endcap only writes vendor, product type, description and the Shopify category, because those are the fields where a wrong value is visible and reversible. Prices, identifiers, publication state and status are decisions with consequences a tool should not be making on your behalf.
Common questions
Should colors be variants or separate products?
Variants are usually cleaner for search and AI because the options share one page. Separate products work when each color has different photos, copy and SEO goals, but then each title must say the color.
Does Shopify allow duplicate titles?
Yes, it doesn't block them. That's why they pile up unnoticed.
