AI shopping readiness of 4,224 Shopify stores

We scanned 728,700 products in 4,224 Shopify stores the way AI shopping reads them. 37% of stores had at least one product AI assistants can't show.

Why products get blocked

A product is blocked when AI shopping can't show it at all: no image, a $0 price, no title, no product URL, or hidden from search. The two most common reasons we recorded:

Blocked products are only part of the picture: thin descriptions, missing product types and missing attributes don't hide a product, but they make it harder for an assistant to match it to a shopper's question. They lower the readiness score instead.

Method

  • Stores: 4,224 live Shopify stores with public products, found while building Endcap's outreach list. Not a random sample of all Shopify stores.
  • What we read: each store's public product feed, up to 250 products per store (728,700 in total). Nothing behind a login, no store owner access.
  • Rules: the same deterministic checks as Endcap's free scan: blocking problems (product can't be shown) and quality problems (product is harder to match). The readiness score weighs both, 0 to 100.
  • What it doesn't measure: whether a specific assistant recommends a store. For that, the free AI score asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude a real buying question.
  • Privacy: only aggregate counts are published. No store is named.
